As you begin to experiment with AI in your legal operations, consider two key tips for making the most of requests to ChatGPT via Prompts.

What is a prompt?

A prompt is a phrase or individual keywords used as input to an AI tool like ChatGPT. The tool then tries to analyze and understand the input and automatically generates a response. So it’s important that you word your prompts in a way that the tool can understand.

First, give proper context to your ask. For example, instead of asking, “what do I need to write an NDA,” tell the AI to act as the general counsel of a technology company and ask the questions it would need to complete a request to draft an NDA.

Second, tailor your request with desired parameters that best meet your needs. For example:

● Length of request (e.g., five sentences)

● Comprehension level

● Form (e.g., an email, essay, contract template)

Here are 2 examples of prompts lawyers can use for Contract Review:

Draft a Contract

Draft a [contract type] between [party 1] and [party 2] for [consideration] in [jurisdiction]

Write a demand letter between [party 1] and [party 2] for [consideration] for [injuries] in [jurisdiction]

Write a liability waiver for [service/product] with [terms/conditions]

Rephrase this clause: [clause]

Review a Contract

Review the following contract and provide me the purpose of the contract, the 3 most important terms of the contract, the duration of the contract, and what the consideration is for the contract: [copy and paste contract]

Summarize the following contract: [copy and paste contract]

Proofread the following: [copy and paste contract]
